House of Culture shot by Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue Russia
The more work I see by Demarchelier the more I wonder if he’s ever going to go outside again. Maybe it’s just me, but all of his photos seem to be indoor studio photos, always, no matter how much the subject screams to be photographed outdoors. Apparently every piece from this shoot was pulled from the Dior archive in celebration of an upcoming exhibit in Russia, so the shoot itself is all over the place. I’m just posting my two favorites here, which sort of go together, since I feel like these two couture pieces evoke nomadic, tribal, gypsy royalty and would sing if photographed in a field.
Do you see what I mean? These are such fantasy pieces, the super long sleeves on the coat above are amazing, and they definitely have that hand-assembled feel to them. Black and gray do not do these amazing pieces any justice! I know Demarchelier has the name, but I don’t like it when editorial strength is sacrificed just to get a well know photographer. If I could get my paws on a copy of the May Russian Vogue I’d have to snip them out and collage them over some greenery so you could see what I mean!
The clothes themselves are still stunning though, which is why I had to post them here. I imagine these ladies coming to meet my party over a field, representatives of a tribe that is wondering why I have crossed into their territory, undecided as to whether or not I should pass through. Kudos to Dior for sparking my imagination!
